Tips on Ensuring Energy Efficient Windows
Did
you know that the old
windows in your home might in fact be contributing to the energy
loss in your home? Yes, windows could be the silent culprit that
causes that spike in your electricity bills. Thankfully, you can take
advantage of the tips below to turn your windows into
energy-efficient devices that help keep your home warm in winter and
cool in the summer.
Warm or cool air might be
escaping through any cracks, gaps or spaces within your window frame.
Take care of this problem by putting caulk to seal them off. If
you're working inside, opt for a non-elastic caulk that can be easily
painted over. If you're working outside, use elastic silicon caulk,
since it's more durable and can better withstand the weather.
Curtains can also make
your windows more energy-efficient, especially thick fabric. Opt for
curtains that hang longer than the entire length of your windows,
preferably those reaching all the way to the floor. These curtains
will keep the heat from escaping, thus making your heater or AC exert
less energy to function efficiently.
If you're concerned about
the window panes themselves, you can install window film with
excellent reflective properties inside your windows. Many of these
films are self-adhesive, allowing for easier installation simply by
removing the adhesive backer and applying it to the window's surface.
You can also use this to complement the energy-efficiency potential
of your curtains.
